I think graffiti itself is a crime. To me its definition is vandalism with a verbal or visual message where it doesn’t belong. Maybe graffiti art is not a good term to use. You can say instead that you’re an artist who is influenced by graffiti even though most interpret it as graffiti art.
But, personally, I think graffiti art can also be amazing. I think the designs are beautiful, interesting, trendy, stylish and unique. Sadly enough when I talk about the subject with other artists most really look down on it. They view it as the least respected art form. It seems like the second people hear the word “Graffiti” they immediately think “Crime. I think the designs are so cool that I would love to see more of it in galleries rather on the streets.
If you’re going around town doing graffiti then I think you’re more of a thief than an artist. It would be nice for a change to see it done responsibly (On paper or canvas and not on somebody’s private property.) The only artist I can think of who did that is Basquiat who brought graffiti art from the streets to galleries and museums. It’s too bad other graffiti artists can’t do better.
If I wanted to do graffiti I would just secretly write the F word on some one’s car and run. If I wanted to do graffiti style art I would do it the way I normally work on my paintings (Seek influences, make some rough sketches, start painting, and spice it up in any way I can think of.)
