Nowadays I have learned that the art fairs are where the coolest art is. During the summer of 2012 I was participating in the Westport Fine arts festival in Westport, CT and I was amazed by all the work I saw. I also had the same impression at the Affordable Art Fair. After spending a whole year reviewing galleries around Chelsea the only one I like there is Agora. Since the, I have still continued to attend their openings. Other than that I only came across around five shows that I liked, the rest was just blank and blank sheets of paper help on the wall with scotch tape. And it turns out that I’m not the only one who thinks that of the Chelsea galleries, I hear that comment quite often from my peers in the art world.
However, I know that there are many more galleries around New York City that I don’t know about. But I will try to seek out the galleries who show in the Affordable Art Fair since I come across a lot of awesome work there. I will also be checking out other art fairs as well like the Governors Island Art Fair, The Armory, etc.
I read a lot of art magazines including Art News, Art in America, etc and I learn a lot of what kind of art and artists are doing very well these days. Out of all the ones I read I think BlueCanvas is the best. Unfortunately they have not come out with any new issues these days. And when I mention that name to people no one has ever heard of it. I wish I could see more galleries showing the type of work they show. If you haven’t heard of it you can see their website at http://www.bluecanvas.com/. At the same time people say that every cities art scene is different and maybe New York City isn’t know for showing that time of work.
