When you start going for job interviews the way you present yourself is extremely important, I can’t stress that enough. When I eventually start hiring studio assistance to come work for me I personally don’t want to hire someone dressed like Marilyn Manson or Carrot Top. The more dapper your appearance is the bigger your chances are of landing on any job you want. If dressing radical is what you enjoy that is fine but only to a certain extent. It’s fine on your own time but not when it comes your professional well being its important to dress for success. When I go to gallery openings, meetings with potential clients or any kind of event relating to my career I’m always making sure I look my best. But when I’m working in my studio, hanging out with friends or just enjoying life then I can relax about the way I look. I can throw on my clothes from H and M or Urban Outfitters. It’s only in situation where I play an important role where I need to dapper up.
Another important aspect is your living environment, which is just as important as your physicals appearance. The cleaner it is better you’ll feel and do. Someday you may have some important people over at your home or may throw an art show in your home. And you’ll make a good impression on people for future opportunities when they see how sanitary you are. And you won’t feel so isolated either because when your place is messy you’ll become so ashamed of it to the point where you won’t want to have people over. A friend of mine told me about someone he once knew who happened to be this unemployed lowlife who lived in his mother’s basement, he didn’t keep it clean and he had a negative self-image. Until one day he looked at himself in the mirror and decided to make the effort to turn himself around. He kept his room clean, dressed more professional, stayed busy and productive and within a few years he was making a lot of money. From that point things went up hill for him.
If I may make a suggestion, try an experiment where you spend the next few months dressing more maturely and tidying up your living environment. The longer you live your life like that you will be amazed on what kind of a difference it makes.
